Joy of Focus loosely follows my train of thought over the month I spent working on it. I often paint with the inanimate objects I collect, usually drawn to things that I feel hold some sort of life or “soul,” and try to capture that sense of life through paint. With this painting, however, I decided to work object by object, allowing the composition to build itself directly onto the panel over time.
Rather than overthinking each aspect of the composition, I rendered whatever I was most excited to paint in the moment. In doing so, the painting became a kind of visual diary of my brain, quite literally capturing the excitement of my hyperfocus as it shifted over the course of the month. I chose objects based on what I felt most drawn to at each stage of the process, ultimately creating a composition that I wanted to radiate a sense of joy.
